Tonsillectomy Surgery at Best Hospitals in India

Tonsils are collections of lymphoid tissue in the oral cavity. There is a tonsil on each side at the back of the mouth, they are usually visible with the uvula hanging down between them.

Being lymphoid tissue they play a role in immune function. There is however a lot of other lymphoid tissue in the head and neck so the immune system does not rely entirely on the tonsils for defence against bacteria and viruses. No studies have shown an increase in upper respiratory infections if the tonsils and adenoids have been removed.

Who needs a Tonsillectomy?

Tonsillitis and the need for tonsillectomies are more common in children than adults. However, people of any age can experience trouble with their tonsils and require surgery. One case of tonsillitis is not enough to warrant a tonsillectomy. Usually, the surgery is a treatment option for those who are often sick with tonsillitis or strep throat. If you’ve had at least seven cases of tonsillitis or strep in the last year (or five cases or more over each of the last two years), talk to your doctor about whether a tonsillectomy is an option for you.

Tonsillectomy can also treat other medical problems, including:

  • Breathing problems related to swollen tonsils
  • Periods in which you stop breathing during sleep
  • Bleeding of the tonsils
  • Cancer of the tonsils

The Operation of Tonsillectomy Surgery

Tonsillectomy is performed in hospital under general anaesthesia. I do not perform tonsillectomy as a day procedure. All patients will be in hospital overnight after surgery. People with a history of sleep apnoea will need to be admitted to the high dependency area for closer observation of the airway and oxygen levels post operatively.

There are many ways to remove the tonsils, these include gentle dissection, coblation, laser, partial tonsillectomy and the use of a microdebrider.

In the past I have had experience of all these methods. I have found that the safest method with the lowest complication rate and least pain is gentle dissection with complete removal of the tonsils. Bleeding is controlled using ties and limited bipolar diathermy. The objective is to create as little trauma to the tonsil bed as possible. The less trauma caused, the less the inflammation which reduces the likelihood of delayed post-operative bleeding.

After Surgery Care

Since it is a day procedure, the patient can go home the same day. He is advised rest with elevation of the head to avoid swelling. The patient can consume soft cool fluids, mashed foods but nothing scratchy or hard that can irritate the throat. No exertion like running or lifting heavy loads till at least two weeks after surgery to prevent bleeding. Postsurgical pain and soreness go away in a week’s time and patient can return to normal activities in about two weeks. A bout or two of vomiting after surgery is normal as it is due to the effect of general anesthesia.
