Vertebroplasty Spine Surgery at World Class Hospitals in India

Vertebroplasty is an outpatient procedure for stabilizing compression fractures in the spine. Bone cement is injected into back bones (vertebrae) that have cracked or broken, often because of osteoporosis. The cement hardens, stabilizing the fractures and supporting your spine. For people with severe, disabling pain caused by a compression fracture, vertebroplasty can relieve pain, increase mobility and reduce the use of pain medication.

Kyphoplasty is similar to vertebroplasty, but uses special balloons to create spaces within the vertebra that are then filled with bone cement. Kyphoplasty can correct spinal deformity and restore lost height.

How is vertebroplasty done?

Your doctor will likely start by giving you medicine to make you feel calm. Some patients who are in severe pain may need extra medicine to make them sleepy. Then your doctor will use numbing medicine (local anesthetic) at the site where the needle will go in. Once the area is numb, he or she will insert a small needle into the crushed bone. They guide the needle into position using special X-ray equipment. So open surgery isn’t necessary.

Once the needle is in position, a bone cement is injected into the bone to secure it. The cement hardens, stabilizing the bone. Several crushed bones can be treated at the same time. The procedure generally takes about one hour for each bone that is treated. Usually, patients can leave the hospital a few hours after the procedure is done.

Vertebroplasty Procedure

Percutaneous vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that involves placing a small needle into the crushed bone. The doctor guides the needle into the fractured vertebra using imaging guidance i.e. under X-ray guidance through a small puncture in the patient’s skin. Once the needle is in position, a bone cement is injected into the bone to secure the affected bone. Several crushed bones can be treated at the same time. The needle is removed and the cement hardens quickly setting the fragments of the fractured vertebra and stabilizing the bone.

The procedure generally takes about one hour for each bone that is treated. It is usually done under local anesthesia and light sedation. Patients can leave the hospital a few hours just after the procedure is done.

Recovery

The patient recovery is quick as it is a minimally invasive surgery with very little blood loss and damage to surrounding tissues. The patients are kept under observation for 1-2 hrs after which they are discharged. They return to normal day to day activities within a week.
